This is actually three responses...

1. Skeeter - in response to your response to my response - I'll have to agree with you. The shoot-em-all mentality definitely hits and takes everyone with it, and it is usually completely unrelated to the actual business XLNX (or ALTR) is in.

2. To the guy asking me about Internet Reconfigurable Logic
This is a brilliant marketing spin on yesterday's news. I have to hand it to XLNX marketing for that one! For the last 12 years a designer would have been able to reconfigure a XLNX or ALTR FPGA over the internet (or some other network), but he would have had to do everything himself - proper design, software, etc. The XLNX announcement is basically a software framework to make this much easier, and standard.

Seriously though, if XLNX executes on a good framework (check out the Silicon X'presso area on XLNX website), it will give many telecom and datacom companies (where XLNX already doesn most of their business) a new way of looking at things. Software sells silicon - Altera has known that for years.

3. Virtex rules. ALTR has the $5000 (in Texas) bounty out as a way of spreading FUD that Virtex isn't real. It is. If you actually get your hands on a 1M gate Virtex (they DO exist), ALTR won't give you the bounty. They will come up with an excuse. Bottom line is that XLNX is kicking ALTR ass on silicon now and will be for the next 9 months.

Waiting for 55 them I'm back in this baby.

bilow, so to say that xlnx ONLY competes (broad sense) on an island with altr isn't true, is it? btw, is anybody else trying to actually enter the fpga biz directly? thx for the comments.
