Your independent assessments of politicians irrespective of party are refreshing, though maybe it's just that I happen to agree. On the whole we haven't had such bad presidents since we got rid of Nixon. I will never forgive Lyndon Johnson for letting Vietnam happen, despite his supposed repentance and anguish--especially since I voted for him against Goldwater, whom I now hold in higher regard because he was more honest.

It was interesting seeing Jimmy Carter giving Bush higher marks recently for actually paying attention to some of Carter's projects for international humanitarian aid, whereas Clinton seems insecure about letting a rival Democrat take credit for this.

But you are right --I'd forgot about Spiro Agnew greasing the ways for a resignation of the president by exuding slime as he himself disappeared. Clinton totally lacks Nixon's gift for surrounding himself with unscrupulous operators.

Too bad Clinton did not have my grandfather for a mentor. He sent each of his sons out into the world with the parting advice: "Keep your pecker in your pants!"
