The bottom line is in how the house you live in was plumbed. If it has some areas where the pipes lay flat and against an outside wall the chances are in a real cold spell that the pipes will burst. If I were going to shut my house down I would blow them out to insure they do not freeze. You could have a plumber do it for around $75 to $100 if you had to and would be way ahead of paying to repair walls and carpet and furniture in the case of a break.
