i have a question. it has to do with all the recent much-hyped internet stocks and their ipo's. hopefully several people will share their knowledge/ideas/facts.

here goes: a company wants to spin off a division in an ipo. what i have seen, in NAVR was people buying navarre, the parent company because it would have a large % (85) ownership of the new company. i have also seen situations where there are preferred people (ones with large accounts at brokerages) that get shots at ipo shares. unless i'm mistaken, were they offered this opportunity because of their wealth or preferred status?

does it change? do sometimes you buy the parent and sometimes you buy the new company? is there a second ticker? if so, how does one find out and know the difference? TIA for not kicking me for not knowing this already.
