Ibexx, >>>Some doubt was expressed (by MC, I think) that since this guy received his formal education in engineering, he probably would not have what it would take to run companies like INTC. <<<

Yes, something along those lines - although we never said that we didn't think Craig Barrett could run Intel.

We did question however, whether the scientific establishment could ever do anything commercially successful. By that I mean they could could do moon shots (eg, NASA) or develop the Atom Bomb (eg Los Alamos) where cost or ROI had no meaning, but it took oddballs like Jobs, Wozsniac, Paul Allen, and Bill Gates to come with startling breakthroughs as opposed to Bell Labs, Xerox Science Park (or whatever they called it), and the IBM research establishment.

You also kind have to remember, Although Noyce and Moore were Science establishment types, Andy Grove was probably not.

The good cop, bad cop schtick that Andy Grove and Craig Barrett has playing is probably a good reason for a lot of their success in recent years. But, when Craig Barrett was about to take over, I was skeptical whether a big science, good guy could hack it in a commerical environment.

After six months on the job, I am very impressed by Craig Barrett's managment. He seems to have taken over completely and show a lot of self confidence. Having this huge shadow looking over his shoulders doesn't seem to phase him in the least.

After the tumultuous years under Andy Grove, Craig Barrett's self assured manner and calm style of management seems to be just what Intel needs at this moment in their history.

That is one reason why I am so bullish on Intel. Intel is the new paradigm. It is a big science type of company that can succeed in the commercial world. It is company that will be studied by business schools and its management style (or corporate culture) will be copied the world over. Companies like Apple or Microsoft are one shot deals. Apple was just there are the right time at the right place - and the stars and planets were just properly aligned. That is not anything that is repeatable. With, Micrsoft it is a bit different. Microsoft is all Bill Gates - once he leave or if he slows down - that is it for Microsoft.

But, Intel is something entirely different. I tried to tell this to that nice young man, Michael Burke, on his own thread, "it is the Corporate Culture, Stupid". Michael is a bright young, but he is going to have to understand this (Corporate Culture thing) - if he really wants to be a great financial advisor.

I know, I know - I'm digressing - I'm trying to kill tow birds with one stone.

Regards,

Mary
