I, for one, am certainly NOT forgetting cable. My company
has done a cablemodem device and I've got a cable stock on
my buy list waiting for it's entrypoint to hit.

My view is that cable and DSL do and will increasingly continue
to compete for our high-bandwidth dollars. Both sides will
profit in the short and middle term ... in the long term, who
knows ... the leviathan phone and cable companies are fighting
over who gets to control the pipe to your house ... perhaps it
will become something else completely ... like pervasive wireless.

Short term, DSL is a better deal in my area ... GTE will sell me
256k/64k for $30/mo ... and the wire is all mine ... the cable
alternative here have bad performance ... the segments tend to
be overloaded. This is strictly a short-term issue as the cable
people are paying increasing attention to Quality of Service (QoS)
provisioning ... controlling the segment to deliver a guaranteed
level of performance to the user ... but they are not there yet
... the standard knock on most cable vendors is that the speed
goes to hell during prime-time. Read @Home reviews.

Both DSL and cablemodem are entering their hockey-stick growth phase.
