You don't give up any of your existing shares, but for every 10K shares you have you will get one preferred share that is equal to 10K shares. This effectively doubles the number of shares you own and nearly doubles the number of shares outstanding, but since the acquirer is excluded his holdings stay the same, reducing his percentage of ownership nearly by half.
