WHO CARES. [about the ITU 3g standard]?

As Gregg has pointed out, this is less important than the patent trial, but that doesn't mean that it is completely unimportant. If Qualcomm could get a 3g standard that was backward compatible with CDMAOne then that would be a huge boon to Qualcomm. But if that is impossible and the only two alternatives to that are allowing WCDMA in its uncompatable(sp?) state or nixing both WCDMA and CDMA2000 from ITU 3g, then I'm sure Qualcomm will choose the latter because it hurts Ericsson much more than it hurts the Q!. As you point out, Qualcomm will still have a 3g CDMA system, but Ericsson will be shut out due to patent problems.

I base this on the assumption that the ITU throws out standards if there is the slightest IP contention (so Ericsson has just as much sway with ITU as Qualcomm), but when it comes to actual deployment Ericsson has to actually have a realistic patent infringement case.
