Looks like the Koreans will be back in business next year. Perhaps they can teach the Japanese how it is done. Jeff

S KOREAN ECONOMY FORECAST TO BOTTOM OUT 1Q 1999

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEOUL, Dec 10, 1998 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- The Korean economy is expected to bottom out during the first quarter of next year, according to a business survey by the Korea Development Bank.

The KDB's survey of 1,218 manufacturers showed that the business survey index (BSI) stood at 79 for the first quarter of next year, representing the third growth period in a row since the BSI of 60 for the second quarter of this year.

Since the BSI presages the economic outlook by about one to two quarters ahead, the KDB said, the domestic economy was expected to bottom out during the first quarter and then recover gradually.

The BSI on capital conditions rose to 86 for the first quarter of next year from 79 for the fourth quarter of this year, an indication that companies are optimistic about their capital conditions.

Large companies are more optimistic than small companies about the outlook for business recovery next year, according to the business survey.

The sector-by-sector BSI found the semiconductor sector leading the business recovery.
