Platinum and palladium edged to fresh four and five-month highs respectively on the London afternoon fix, both pushed up on the now-perennial question of Russian supply plans for the first months of the year.

A strike at South Africa's Anglo American Platinum Corp (Amplats) also boosted white metal prices, with Johannesburg analysts seeing the action as a possible pointer to wider labour unrest in the country during 1999.
