To All, FYI Chinese Undergo Business Divestment BEIJING (AP) -- China's highest court and prosecutors have severed ties with the businesses they once ran as part of a Communist Party-ordered housecleaning. Most government agencies, the judiciary, military and the armed police must relinquish control over their commercial holdings by year's end in an effort to curb rampant corruption and bureaucratic interference that has hindered China's transition to free markets. The Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate managed to carry out the divestment by Nov. 30, the official People's Daily reported Wednesday. It did not say what kinds of businesses had been relinquished. China's national police and spy agencies and the Ministry of Justice should finish transferring their commercial holdings by mid-December, the newspaper said. As the deadline nears, state media have been filled with daily reports on the piecemeal efforts. The People's Liberation Army has handed over 123 business to local governments in the southwestern Chengdu Military Region, the People's Daily reported. Over the past 20 years as market-oriented reforms enriched China, government agencies, the courts and the military moved into business to expand their power and make up for insufficient funds from Beijing. Despite the looming deadline, the government has given little indication how the divestment is being carried out and whether and how agencies and the military will be compensated for the lost revenues.
