GERN Good news!! Today in Nature, also may help ASTM and others

In today's issue of Nature Magazine (December 10, 1998) volume 396, pp. 506-508, there is a very interesting and significant news story. In the article, it states that the Senate Appropriations committee for Labor, Health, and Education, which is chaired by Arlen Specter, is LIKELY TO REVISE THE CURRENT BAN on stem cell research, at least as performed by GERN. This is because the work performed by GERN was on stem cells isolated from fetal tissue rather than embryos...

This is a quick synopsis of the article. It is copyrighted, so I cannot reproduce it in full. I got it from the nature web site nature.com.

If this change occurs, it will open the doors to federal funding for GERN (and probably others, but GERN is specifically mentioned in the article.)

P.S. I also heard a rumor over on the Yahoo site that there would be a story about cloning of cattle that was very successful that may also give a boost to these companies, but I don't have access to Science until tonight.
