Actually, right now, Island is within a second or two of real time and my orders are appearing instantly. Does it just run slow when the market is cranking?

I used Island for yesterday. Nearly instantaneous execution (buy @ ask) time elapsed was about 2 seconds.

Using a cable modem that is currently running slower than a 28.8 baud modem.

You have to remember that the browser/java based ISLD book that we see, was really an afterthought by Josh. He put it up there as a convenience to the public, but doesn't really spend much time on it. It is sometimes down for hours or days at a time, sometimes behind, and sometimes just plain flaky.<g> But mostly, it is dead on, within a second or two.

Apparently, they spend their time making sure the proprietary system they use for the trades run smoothly, since that's where their income is.

Frankly, I've always considered myself lucky just to see it working. There's word that Ross is considering bringing back the view of the book from within the MBT/RealTick program. Just rumors, as far as I know, so far. Have to wait and see.
