Compaq Names Dr. Judith L. Craven to Board of Directors

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 1998--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced that Dr. Judith L. Craven, 53, has been named to the company's board of directors. The addition of Dr. Craven, until recently president of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, raises the number of Compaq board members to 12.

"Dr. Craven brings a tremendous breadth of management expertise to Compaq," said Benjamin M. Rosen, Compaq chairman of the board. "Her extensive experience -- from running one of the largest United Way organizations in the country to serving as Director of Public Health for the city of Houston, from her practice of medicine to her service as a reservist in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. -- will be a valuable asset to Compaq."

Dr. Craven is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. She holds a M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, a M.P.H. from the University of Texas School of Public Health and a B.S. degree from Bowling Green State University. She also studied in the Program for Senior Managers in Government at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Prior to heading the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, Dr. Craven was vice president for multicultural affairs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; director of public health for the City of Houston; chief of Family Health Service for the City of Houston; and chief of Anesthesia at Riverside General Hospital.

Also, Dr. Craven has served as professor of Public Health Administration and professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; clinical assistant professor of Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine; and visiting professor of public health at Shanghai Medical University. Dr. Craven serves on the boards of directors at A.H. Belo Corporation, Luby's Cafeterias Inc. and SYSCO Corporation.
