Colloidal Silver
A Nutritional Supplement
The Problem
Many bacterial infections are beginning to defy all antibiotics. Many doctors and
hospitals are finding bacteria increasingly difficult to eradicate as resistant strains
develop, sometimes even changing their natural structure to fight off the antibiotics. The
application of stronger, more toxic antibiotics is not an option, because these
concentrated doses pose a threat to humans, many of whom may already be allergic to
these cures.
The Solution
One of the few answers to this dilemma may be the use of silver. Silver is currently being
used throughout the medical industry to fight and eliminate bacteria, extracellular viruses
and fungi. It is claimed that the uses are many and varied. Silver is being used in
bandages with a new slow-release technology that kills bacteria on wounds for days. It
is now being used in new water filters for public water works in cities such as
Milwaukee, Marquette and Kenosha, where it kills the bacterial growth on the filters.
(Milwaukee had previously experienced a problem where 400,000 people got sick and
100 people died after drinking contaminated water from the old system.) It has also
been widely used in creams and lotions, promoting faster healing and thus giving relief
for burn victims. Silver has also been used since the 1800's in solutions for newborn
babies' eyes and later silver solutions were actually mandated by law to be administered
to the newborns, because it dramatically reduced eye infections and the transmission of
venereal disease. Manufactures have also announced many new silver-based products
including a new line of socks from Great American Knitting Mills (Gold Toe), which has
created a new yarn that contains pure silver. The new silver yarn is designed to provide
natural protection against bacteria and odor.
Historically Used on and in the Body
In his book Colloidal Silver, A literature Review, 1996, pp. 13, John W. Hill, D.C.
states "Historically in the pre-1938 era, colloidal silver was used as a topical antiseptic
to treat cuts, abrasions and burns; as an oral (and often injected) antibiotic to treat a
variety of infectious diseases; and by Ayurvedic and Homeopathic physicians as a tonic
or elixir and as a remedy for a variety of afflictions of the mucous membranes". John
also concluded (pp.14) that, "It (colloidal silver) remains popular as an "alternative"
health care modality because of the large number of anecdotal reports of positive
benefits".
Dr. Henry Crookes is credited for much of the wide use of colloidal silver in the early
1900's. He used it to treat many infectious organisms. His scientific reports concluded
that there wasn't any known microbe that could not be killed in the laboratory with
colloidal silver within six minutes.
In H.E.L.P.ful News 12/1/93 vol. 9, number 12, pp 1-3, it states, "The following is a
collection of conditions and pathogens we have found documented before 1938 where
patients were being successfully treated using colloidal silver." The list is then given of 94
maladies treated by colloidal silver including anthrax bacilli, B. dysentery, B.
tuberculosis, boils, burns and wounds of the cornea, chronic eczema, colitis, diarrhoea,
dysentery, ear infections, gonorrhea, inflammatory rheumatism, influenza, para-typhoid,
pneumococci, ringworm of the body, septic ulcers of the legs, shingles, soft sores,
staphylococcus pyogenea, streptococci, typhoid, warts, whooping cough, and many
others.
More Recent Work and Tests
In his book The Body Electric (1985) Dr. Robert O. Becker, outlines the results of his
test work where he used silver electrodes and a very small electric current to kill
bacteria and heal wounds. In chapter 8 he states, "We were certain it was the silver ions
that did the job rather than the current when we found that the silver impregnated culture
medium killed new bacteria placed in it even after the current was switched off". He also
states, "We may only have scratched the surface of positive silver's medical brilliance.
Already it's an amazing tool. It stimulates bone forming cells, cures the most stubborn
infections of all kinds of bacteria, and stimulates healing in skin and other soft tissues.
We don't know whether the treatment can induce healing in other parts of the body, but
the possibility is there, and there may be other marvels latent in this magic caduceus".
In a report published on the internet by Manfred E. Bayer, M.D. and Margret H. Bayer,
PH.D. (1996) they reported that the growth rate of the spirochetes, borrelia
borgdorferelli (LYME disease) in vitro are visibly inhibited by mild silver protein at
concentrations of 2 to 10 PPM (parts per million) over a period of 1 to 3 days. Higher
concentrations produced a more pronounced retardation in growth.
It has long been claimed that the use of colloidal silver can help boost the ability of the
immune system to fight off disease and infection. In an article printed in The Northern
Miner, May 18, 1998, in a report titled "Medicinal Silver" a group of AIDS patients
were given one dose of polyvalent silver oxide (approximately 40 PPM). The report
states that the patients' white blood cell count increased by between 10% and 350%.
The article also stated that "the single treatment appeared to prolong the lives of the
eight patients by as much as three years". In another test reported by the National
Virology Laboratory of Israel at Tel Hashomer, a polyvalent silver oxide solution, at a
concentration as low as 20 PPM, was inserted into cultured HIV infected cells, resulting
in a kill rate of 98.4%. Encouraged by the results, the Kaplan Hospital, also in Israel,
conducted a study of laboratory mice stricken with murine AIDS. A single dose of 40
PPM of polyvalent silver oxide reportedly resulted in an effective cure on the lab
animals.
Dr. J. Cardot, M.D. published a letter on the internet, in which he states that he has
successfully treated over 50 cases of viral pneumonia with a 30 PPM silver protein at a
dosage of 1 tbs. (taken three times a day) for a duration of between 4 and 30 days,
depending on the severity of the case. He also states that he has had similar success with
other infections including ear infections in children, infectious fibromyalgia, Sjorgen's
syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis with synovial fluid infections, systemic candida albicans,
Staph infections, gingivitis, the LYME disease spirochete, HIV, ringworm, psoriasis,
genital herpes and herpes zoster.
There are numerous other books, articles and testimonials that make similar claims to
the ones stated above. Most are available on the internet and other places where
mineral supplement books and information are available.
What Is Colloidal Silver?
Colloidal silver consists of pure metallic particles of silver suspended in purified water (in
our case double distilled to insure purity). Each particle is held in suspension in the
water, because of it's sub-micronic size. The electronically produced particles are so
small that they cannot be seen through a regular microscope. The small size enables the
silver particles to travel through the bloodstream to all parts of the body. There are no
other additives.
How it works
The Northern Miner article referenced above explains how the process works. It states,
"Single-charged silver replaces hydrogen atoms, which supply energy to bacteria and
extra-cellular viruses. Blocking the energy supply renders such viruses inactive." In other
words, the silver particles block the energy flow to the bacteria and viruses. Because the
bacteria cannot obtain the energy they need to survive, they die. Viruses are not actually
listed as living organisms, so instead of dying, they become inactive. The process can
happen very rapidly. In numerous reported laboratory tests, the bacteria were dead
within six minutes of being exposed to the silver solutions.
The FDA
The FDA has not approved colloidal silver as a drug, nor is it likely to do so in the near
future. With the estimated costs of getting a drug approved to be in the range of
$300,000,000 and with a time constraint of 8 to 10 years, there is no incentive for the
big drug companies to spend the time and money to get it approved. Because the drug
companies cannot patent the use of colloidal silver and then charge large sums of money
for its use, there is little chance that any conclusive work or testing will be forthcoming,
no matter what potential benefits its use may hold.
In an article in the Provo Herald, Feb. 13, 1992, Daryl Tichy, a member of the
administrative staff at the Brigham Young University, gave the results of his findings from
his private research done on colloidal silver. He had his electronically-produced
colloidal silver tested at several laboratories and determined that the silver solution killed
a variety of pathogens including the HIV virus. He also injected some colloidal silver into
his six year old son who had about 70 warts on his hands. He reported that all the warts
cleared up after just one injection. Tichy, who was unable to gain financial support for
further testing from the big companies or the FDA stated, "It's like saying, 'here is the
answer that everyone is looking for, but no one wants to find.'" It is easy to see why little
support would be given to such testing, when the results of the testing may cut into
corporate profits.
While it is true that colloidal silver cannot be sold as a drug, it may however be sold as a
nutritional supplement, as long as no claims are made as to potential benefits. We here
at American Silver make no claims as to the benefits that may be obtained by the use of
this product, and have provided the above listed research information, as a courtesy to
our shareholders and friends. We have listed the sources for our information and wish
others to do their own research as well.
Warning
Colloidal silver is non- addictive and non-toxic, but the extreme misuse of this or other
silver products may cause a condition called argyria. Argyria has no known side affects
except that it causes a greying of the skin color. The minimum amount of sliver known to
cause argyria in adults is 900 mg of silver taken orally in one year. In order to reach this
level of silver intake an individual would have to consume 380-8 oz. bottles of 10 PPM
colloidal silver or 126-8 oz. bottles of 30 PPM colloidal silver within a year. Suggested
adult dosage is about to 1 teaspoon once or twice daily. EPA standards for drinking
water permit an individual to consume the equivalent of 35 milliliters (7 tsp of 10 PPM)
colloidal silver per day from natural sources.
