ATI agrees to buy Chromatic
Mark Hachman

Silicon Valley- As part of its ongoing push into the set-top-box market, PC
graphics chip leader ATI Technologies Inc. last week agreed to acquire
multimedia-IC vendor Chromatic Research Inc. for $67 million in stock.

ATI, however, will leave behind Chromatic's Mpact line, which combines
various multimedia processing functions in a single chip, and is negotiating the
sale of the business to Multimedia Convergence Corp. (MCC), Chicago, a
start-up manufacturer of set-top-box PCs
.

Chromatic will become a wholly owned subsidiary of ATI, Thornhill, Ontario,
but will probably retain its identity and current headquarters, according to
John Monti, vice-president of marketing at the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based
company.

"Chromatic's development to date adds significantly to our technology
portfolio and allows us to extend our competencies into fast-growing
markets," said Adrian Hartog, ATI's vice president of engineering, in a
statement.

"This higher level of integration allows us to address fast-growing segments in
the sub-$500 computer, set-top-box, and consumer-electronics industries,"
he said.........

Chromatic, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., will serve as ATI's Silicon
Valley research facility.

Chromatic comes with no HW solution, till they make another.

But now that Chromatic is in Sunnyvale and is ATIs research arm I think that Linux/Set top project filled with ambition is ATIs

Good way to keep your costs down, but it could be someone else too.
