NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Ericsson Telephone dived 15 percent Thursday after the mobile-phone maker said 1998 and 1999 earnings and sales will fall short of expectations amid flagging worldwide demand and a shift by buyers to less-profitable entry-level products.

Ericsson's American depositary receipts (ERICY) tumbled 4 5/16 to 24 79/16 at midday. Shares are now about 30 percent off their 52-week high.

In effect, the warning means the fourth quarter will turn out significantly worse than expected. The company had been expected to earn 32 cents a share, according to a consensus of analysts surveyed by First Call.

Mark Cabi, an analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston, had been at the high range for the fourth quarter, estimating a profit of 37 cents a share. He's trimmed that estimate to 28 to 30 cents.

While Ericsson sees signs of recovery in some Asian markets, Chief Executive Sven-Christer Nilsson told analysts at a meeting in Stockholm, the company plans to speed up job reductions and efforts to streamline and reorganize operations to offset lower sales and profits.

The company, with more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, is already halfway through a previously announced plan to cut its work force by 20,000. More cuts are on the way -- analysts say as many as 10,000. An announcement is planned in late January.

LOL - 'Munder's NetNet Fund'
<<

fund whose portfolio consists 100% of Internet stocks.
It is called Munder's NetNet Fund.

I truly believe the fund will be renamed in the not too
distant future by changing one letter in the fund's
name: MuRder's NetNet Fund. If you decide not to leave
anything to those who survive you, then place your 401-K
and IRA accounts into this fund.
