I think you raise an excellent point, halfscot. I'm having a friendly disagreement with the very sharp Jeff Bond about INTC's mid-term future (I am bearish on the fundamentals) centering on similar points.

There is just no question that the CPU and graphics power of latest gen machines is well beyond not only the demands of the latest software, but of essentially everything but games software on the current horizon. Bandwidth is the bottleneck. I reckon you won't "need" to upgrade that $130 CPU till well after 2000 hits.
