Coriolis: To understand what goes on behind the scenes a bit, and a good bit on disciplined trading do/don'ts, pick "The Electronic Day Trader" .... I don't remember who wrote it but you can find it easily on Amazone or Barnes & Noble Online.

Market Makers can "show" really anything they want. They can sell to themselves, display screwy bids, short large numbers of shares. By widening the spread the can pick up shares cheap at the bid, and essentially dissuade sellers because of the large spread. They can then turn back around and raise the bid price without moving the ask. More commonly, they can simulate weakness in a given issue to elicit AM selling....this is why you never buy a stock in the first 1/2 hour unless you have information that makes it so strong, the MMs will not be able to control the bid/ask. Remember, the MMs want shares to but want them cheap. It is in their best interest to make a strong issue look weak to shake out weak hands to pick up their shares.

There is a big difference between the Nas and the NYSE. The NYSE has a specialist that works the floor and controls the order flow of his issue. His job is to make a fair market. NYSE stocks are not nearly as volatile as Nas stocks...this can be good or bad. Today, with ASTM, it was very bad.

I believe Triffin is very knowledgeable in this area, Triffin, if you are reading this can you shed some light on this subject.

Hope this helps somewhat Coriolis.

Better luck to all of us in the coming days.
