perhaps it's a good sign that amzn's service is perfect when it's limiting itself to three whole items -- bodes well for the walmart of the web strategy

from tmf

Three weeks ago i ordered a video from amazon, it was "Hamlet" with Mel Gibson. The
shipping time was 1-2 weeks, not a problem for me. Yesderday i got an e-mail from the
company stating that they cancelled my order because the movie was unavailable. So i
proceded to go down to the local video store and purchased one of the shelf.

My point is they didn't even backorder the item, so what does this mean, do they have supply
problems or what? I have always been happy with orders and service in the past, and this
movie does not appear to be a limited supply item. As a shareholder this concerns me.

Yeah, I had a problem with their video service, too. I wanted to order Monty Python Live At
The Hollywood Bowl, but they didn't have it -- I mean, they didn't even have it listed; their search
engine never heard of it. So I hopped on over to Borders.com and found it and ordered it.

I'm not sure what's up with this. The original premise for the book store was that they had virtually
everything, so you never needed to go somewhere else (well, okay, except for used and/or
out-of-print books, as well as some scientific and technical books). But that doesn't appear to be
the case with videos.

I don't know whether this is because they're still "gearing up" -- or, to put it differently, they
announced the opening of the video store before it was fully stocked -- but I really think they need
to fix it or customers may begin to look upon Amazon's video store as no more complete than their
gift store -- some nice items, but not your "go to" store when you need to find something.

And, yeah, I'm a shareholder too.

I tried to order a book two weeks ago that said it was available to ship in 24 hours. Five days later
my account showed that the order had still not been filled, and an email to Amazon told me they
would get on it ASAP. Two weeks later I the order still had not shipped, so I canceled it and
drove 10 miles to the Barnes and Nobles, where it was in stock. Maybe it's just the holiday rush.
