WDC & GMR from IBM & from Veeco!!!!
Western Digital Corp. today is expected to make a round of hard-disk-drive product introductions that should enable it to catch up with competitors in terms of leading-edge technology, while Quantum Corp. is expected to unveil its Data Protection System (DPS) feature.

The new drives from Irvine-based Western Digital feature giant magneto resistive (GMR) heads from IBM Corp. The two companies in June signed an agreement enabling Western Digital to offer desktop drives using Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM's GMR heads at the same time that IBM is introducing similar drives.

Western Digital's Expert line of 7,200- rpm drives offers capacities of 9.1 Gbytes, 13.5 Gbytes and 18 Gbytes, along with the GMR heads and an Ultra ATA/66 interface. The GMR heads and Ultra ATA/66 interface also are offered with a new four-platter 20.4-Gbyte Caviar drive.

The new drives are expected in the reseller and OEM channels by late January.

Milpitas, Calif.-based Quantum used its latest Fireball Plus KA series of 7,200-rpm drives with Ultra ATA/66 interface and capacity from 6.4 Gbytes to 18.2 Gbytes to showcase DPS. The software resides on the drive to test the head, buffer and other areas for drive-related system problems. It can be downloaded from the Web for use with other Quantum drives sold in the last two years or so.

For resellers, DPS reduces the infrastructure and processing costs associated with returned drives, said Ralph Dickman, Quantum product marketing manager.

The drives will be available to resellers and OEMs early in the second quarter.
