Last night at a coctail party I heard that both CPQ and DELL are in fear of a new type of TV-type of internet device where you can access the internet. I asked what companies make this thing is it oracle? Can anyone help me out with this news? Thank you.

Feeling very sad this morning. Got stopped out on my CPQ position yesterday at 39-5/8. I've never had a long term capital gain before - most I've ever held anything was 3 months. I hate when I can't be around on a trading day!

Today's IBD ...

Positive mention of CPQ as a top new buy of highly rated growth and income funds. Brandywine Fund Family took a new position of 8.1 mil. shares.

As for the market in general, IBD TA guys are extremely worried now. Dow's 200 MVA is just below 8800 - if we breach that on a closing basis, it's bad news. NYSE A/D line is heading south.

john rosser. Re: ""The bar is set so low for Compaq..it will be like a baby step.."...Yeah, and let's keep it that way!" Thanx for your excellent post. I agree with you. HYPE ends up more often than not coming back to bite you in the butt.

I also agree the CPQ vs. Dell is a set up. They are going in two different directions, but the immature prefer to think in terms of a zero sum game. And wiser heads can't disabuse them.

Re: "...unrealistic expectations do not help the long-term stockholder...." Couldn't agree more. It just gets your hopes up and you get disappointed. I prefer a nice steady growth rate, but with today's volatility, I'm afraid that's an unrealistic wish.

Re: "Only a fool would believe that direct sales are NOT going to, in part...perhaps a large part, canabilize existing indirect sales." You may be a little too conservative here. It has been my impression that CPQ's initiative is designed to bring more business to a branded product that was previously going to "white boxes". If that's the case, more/most of the new direct sales could be plus business, particularly in the LONG RUN, 'cause without it, more could/would be going direct (to DELL for example). We'll see.
