Amein, I think the best way to look at them is as day-traders. They bring liquidity to the market. Besides, as I pointed out before, the market makers don't have deep enough pockets to manipulate the price of large cap stocks like Dell without massive collusion. Given the successful lawsuit against market makers on the spread, the existence of SOES, etc., not to mention the fact that institutions will negotiate trades between themselves without involving a market maker, the whole scenario is ludicrous. On the other hand, I'm sure you could interest Oliver Stone if your script is good enough <VBG>.

Seriously, if you were talking about a thinly traded stock with only a few market makers, that's another story. They can and have manipulated prices. It's easy to pick off stop loss orders which are visible.
