Conference call observations - I listened to the conference call and what I heard was a couple of guys who are trying to reduce expectations because they are facing a lot of uncertainty with respect to how the market is going to play out in 1999. The CEO is convinced that he needs more feet on the street and both agreed that bid response activity was directly related to the number of sales persons and that the limit is on the number of direct sales staff and not the market opportunity. Therefore, expect a continuation of heavy marketing and R&D expense. I personally like this attitude and believe it represents the best chance for a home run. My portfolio objective with CIENA is high risk, high reward. I want to see the company either go down in flames or make it bigtime after a good effort. I like the odds on the upside.
