Most people are not interested in or cannot keep up with the technology progress. They do however tend to know someone who does (at least in their opinion). At the very least, they ask the sales guy for advice. So what is to make the average "expert" recommend one *company* (not the card) over another? Only if that company has consistently made headlines and won awards for one (or any) of their cards.

You're intentionally describing TDFX, right? This is clearly why Banshee is selling so well in retail. If the sales people and the techno-nerds, and the game-aholics are all saying "Voodoo?", what do you think the OEM's will want to say back? "Yes, Voodoo." How often
is ATI recommended? They've got a lot to overcome to reach anywhere near the brand recognition of TDFX.

ATI does not have a part to compete with TDFX in OEM channels. Rage is not ready to ship. It is probably at least a month away. It may not be out before V3. Tom thinks it will be 90MHz, which means it won't meet the benchmarks ATI has been showing. TDFX will have nearly double the clock of Rage in V3. Their low end will be 40% faster clock. Don't forget the 350MHz RAMDAC either.

Time and time again TDFX' competitors come late and fall short. Everyone is always hyping their products as being the nails in TDFX' coffin, even before they ship, yet forgets that TDFX is steadily working on better things. Rage will likely ship one year after V2, with similar specs. Oh, but wait, I'm sure they'll announce "Rage128 Turbo Pro+ Wonder Boy" any day now. (We'll get 'em next year!)

ATI and NVIDIA will be fighting it out for the number two spot. Let 'em have it.

Sun, do you really think NVIDIA's IPO prospects are looking up? With Rage looming? If Rage is going to seriously impact TDFX, then what's it going to do to TnT, when it couldn't even compete with Banshee, which was "cleary inferior"? If Rage is a nail in anyone's coffin it's NVIDIA's. NVIDIA's got some loan payments to make in a couple of weeks.
