Ok, so what your saying, is depending upon the "mood" of the market at any given time, Mr. Gotbucks, could place a huge sell order higher than what he thinks the market will reach, hoping that smaller investors will think that there could be something wrong, resulting in panic selling. The price drops, then he either buys or covers his short position.
Now the following isn't exactly like what you've been saying, but I recall back around March or so, when a couple posters said that there was water in Hegco's El Grande well. Within a day or so, Canocord dumped thousands and thousands of shares into the market. A panic developed, the price went from the $3s to just above the $2 dollar mark. Within 30 minutes of the market dropping below $2 the next day, Nesbitt came in and bought up the market shares, and from that point the price continued to go up to higher than previous levels, while Canocord got flamed on the BB. This is a more drastic approach to manipulation, and I know that I will be watching for this type of activity once the market cools off a bit.
One thing that i have really been learning is that one person's trading nightmare is another's dream come true. One has to be able to instantly change strategy, if they're gonna make it.
As far as today's KOB activities, all this talk about shorting put me on "yellow alert" this morning. I've been checking out the depth for about an hour up to 30 minutes ago, the shares at bid have been out weighing the asks at a ratio on the average of around 2:1. The price has been holding steady. Trading has dropped off around 80% with only around .5 million traded.
It is a possibility that once the well is capped, that it will be fine. This being the case, and also hearing that only more experienced traders attempt to earn a living by shorting, that in comparison to the amount of trading, the amount of short selling will be relatively small. I know that I wouldn't risk it. I'm still trying to master the art of buying low and selling high.
It would be nice if we had our own rep at the well site. I live in Sacramento which is only around 5 hours away. With work and the holidays it would be hard for me to get away, If my overall investment were higher then being there would be a much high priority.
