All... Q to bid in Brazil. Article does not say so, but I am guessing that this will be a WLL project (not wireline,as implied).

Group with Bell Canada seeks Brazil license

Reuters Story - December 11, 1998 08:53

BRASILIA, Dec 11 (Reuters) - A consortium including Bell Canada's Bell Canada International
said Friday it will bid for a Brazilian "mirror" telephone license that the government is to auction on
Jan. 15.

The license will allow telephone operators to develop parallel companies that will compete with
recently privatized fixed-line and long-distance telephone firms spun off from giant holding Telebras .

Bell Canada, together with Qualcomm do Brasil, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc. and local Grupo
Vicunha, will bid for a license to run a parallel company for fixed-line telephone firm Tele Norte
Leste Participacoes .

"We are competing for (the mirror firm) for Tele Norte Leste," Mike Lisogurski, corporate vice
president of Bell Canada International, told reporters.

Tele Norte Leste, which was spun off from Telebras, was bought by a local group led by
construction firm Andrade Gutierrez on July 29, when the Telebras system was auctioned.

Telebras was sold for a total of $19 billion in one of Latin America's biggest privatization auctions
ever.

Earlier on Friday, Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) announced three groups
had presented proposals to bid for the licenses to run the parallel companies.

A group including U.S.-based Sprint Corp. said it will bid for a license to operate a long-distance
phone company competing with Embratel, which was snapped up by MCI WorldCom .

Anatel will announce on January 5 the groups that have pre-qualified to take part in the auction.

The government expects to rake in $6 billion with the sales of the licenses. The sales will complete
Brazil's massive privatization of its telephone system
