The US and other countries armed both countries. The advantage early on was with Iraq. In the mid to late 80's, the advantage was with Iran. The goal was to maintain the present balance of power. As with the aftermath of the Gulf War, the US and the Mideast states do not want to get involved in redrafting the Middle East political landscape. No one wants to deal with the unintended consequences of such a result.

re: Central America

The bottom line is there's not going to be any business investment in those states with the communists in power.

re: Democratic programs and spending

The fact is that their bloated programs are perpetually going bankrupt. The US economy was growing much faster before the great society programs and the Social Security problems came home to roost. We should just skip this impeachment trial and just bring them up on theft and gross financial mismanagement on the grand scale.
