Jim,
We were discussing the layoffs recently on the CPQ thread and I specifically asked if anyone knew about what was going on. Responses I received indicated that the bulk of the layoffs to take place are in Europe and because of much more restrictive policies would take more time than in America. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but fiscal mess?? Last time I looked CPQ was pretty debt free. I thought that Dell used debt where appropriate, wasn't there talk a couple months back about a 500m debt issue for them? I wonder if you would say the same thing about IBM's balance sheet, they showed around 24B in 'core debt' last time I checked. I won't dispute the 'difficulty' of management point you bring forward. If they pull it off though, the stock will fly. As for history, it sounds like you are basing it on one event, that of last spring. Are there others I am missing?
