GJC: I am a recent investor in BA, though I do know about the business. Boeing is ain a shambles. It will soon up its layoff numbers that it had recently added to. Latest rumor is possibly 70000, and when they lay off, they lay off some of their best contractors. It built facilities in Long Beach to house the new 737 line and then just today announced that it was not moving any lines to Long Beach. Probably some nice new empty buildings. Another rumor says that Condit is going to retire. And by the way, the 'Huge' Asian Crisis has little to do with the mismanagement of Boeing. Last rumor about GE: it could happen, but I would be surprised if GE was so crazy. Yes, Boeing has been buying back stock and will probably increase that, but instead of doing it the profitable way, they are probably doing it to avoid a hostile takeover.

Wow! Why would anyone as smart as me invest in Boeing?
1. Mostly on valuation only. The stock is downtrodden so greatly that there is little downside.
2. The U.S. government would also never let Boeing fold. If they baled out Chrysler, then they would do it for sure to Boeing. Clinton has Boeing on his agenda.
3. Condit leaving would give it a punch.
4. They still have huge orders - most businesses lose money because of not enough business or incapable sales. When Boeing can handle their orders, they will be in excellent shape.

So I feel that now is the time. It may take a year or so, and there may be some more limited downside, but the upside potential outweighs that greatly. I have often done very well buying companies like this. All it takes is an improvement in a loser's performance and everyone jumps in.
