---------------------

Dear Friends:

As I mentioned in my last letter, I would like to keep you regularly informed of current developments
at Avant!. Today, I want to bring you up to date on the recent developments in the ongoing litigation
between Avant! and Cadence Design Systems. As you may know, on December 7, a federal court in
San Jose enjoined future sales of Aquarius, our previous generation place-and-route tool. The court
also allowed Avant! to continue support for Aquarius for 60 days.

Avant! will appeal

Avant! will certainly comply with the court's order, but we respectfully disagree with the court's
findings and will file an appeal. We are disappointed that the court concluded that grounds exist to
issue a preliminary injunction on Aquarius. The injunction is, however, preliminary and we intend to
prevail at trial.

A preliminary injunction does not mean that the issue of misappropriation of intellectual property has
been resolved, but simply puts a hold on sales and support of a product until a final legal determination
has been made. No final determination will be made until there has been a full trial on the issues.

Regrettably, but predictably, our competitor has chosen to spread lies about the impact of the court's
decision on our customers. Please let me set the record straight.

Court's decision does not apply to Apollo

The court's decision is directed at Aquarius, Avant!'s old place-and-route tool. Avant! stopped selling
Aquarius nearly a year ago when it was replaced by Apollo, Avant!'s technologically superior
next-generation place-and-route product

The court's ruling does not apply to Apollo. Apollo is based on Milkyway, a new generation VDSM
common database. Milkyway was independently developed in a rigorously controlled environment
and is totally independent and separate from prior generations of Avant! place-and-route products.

Cadence has no legitimate claim against Apollo

In January 1998, we provided Cadence with the Apollo source code for examination.
After having the Apollo code for 10 months, Cadence executives have suddenly claimed that they plan
to challenge Apollo. In fact, Cadence's attorneys stated in court on October 28 that "Apollo we've
had since January and we're not making claims against Apollo." Because Cadence can't compete with
Apollo in the marketplace, they are now threatening to attack Apollo in court in an attempt to scare
customers and confuse the industry. We urge you to rely on the facts and not react to sabre-rattling by
Cadence, which appears to be willing to do anything within its power to continue to disrupt Avant!'s
marketplace success.

Cadence cannot successfully challenge Apollo

Rather than attempt to determine what code in Aquarius needed to be replaced, and risk Cadence's
inevitable challenge to that decision, Avant! simply replaced all code in those broad, functional areas
challenged by Cadence. Milkyway represents a completely new product that provides database,
interface and utilities services. The entire process of developing Milkyway was strictly supervised by
outside lawyers and independent experts. NONE of the Aquarius code implicated in the court's
injunction is in Milkyway.

Support still available to Aquarius customers

Avant! will also be able to continue providing support, including hot fixes, for the duration of the
60-day period. The 60-day period is an excellent time to migrate to Apollo. We developed Apollo
and Milkyway to address the tough challenges of VDSM design, and it is a superior place and route
product. We have experienced engineers who have been helping customers migrate to Apollo for
nearly a year and they are ready to help any customer in need.

Avant! remains financially and technologically strong

Avant! is very healthy financially, with cash reserves in excess of $100 million. Avant! is the leader in
VDSM design technology and continues to expand into a complete front-end to back-end, full line
ICDA vendor. Customer adoption of our SinglePass design solution and Silicon Early Access solution
has been strong. With your continued support, we have a very bright future.

COST to report earnings on 12/17.

Wexler peers into his crystal ball again and predicts that this fine retailer will once again beat estimates.

Even though the stock is trading near its all-time highs I still consider it dirt cheap and maintain my $100 intermediate-term target and $250 longer-term target.
