NetWare 4.2 Upgrade To Ease Migration To 5.0
Ellis Booker

In an unusual move last week, Novell said it will release an update to an earlier version of its operating system to help customers migrate to the recently introduced NetWare 5.0.

NetWare 4.2 will replace both NetWare 4.11 and intraNetWare. The upgrade is Y2K-compliant and brings some features of NetWare 5.0, such as native IP support, to the NetWare 4.11 installed base.

"This positions people well for a phased introduction to 5.0," said Phil Schacter, a senior analyst at The Burton Group. He added that the vendor had a difficult time migrating users from NetWare 3.x to 4.0, and clearly it does not want to repeat that experience.

"With 5.0, they've tried to provide the kinds of total cost of ownership reasons people need to make the move, such as the functionality of Z.E.N.works," according to Schacter.

Z.E.N.works is Novell's NDS-driven desktop configuration and software distribution tool.

Indeed, NetWare 4.2 includes a Z.E.N.works starter pack of tools, as well as a five-user version of the Oracle8 database. NetWare 4.2 also offers Netscape FastTrack Server for NetWare, Netscape Communicator, the NetWare MultiProtocol Router v3.2, and the Perl v5.1 and NetBasic v6 scripting tools.

A three-user demo copy of NetWare 5 is being included with NetWare 4.2; the 4.2 version includes client software for connecting to NetWare 5.0 servers.

Available Dec. 31, NetWare 4.2 will be offered in a five-user license priced at $1,095. Additional five-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, 250- and 500-user client packs will range in price from $995 to $25,995.
