SFA in the news.... Scientific-Atlanta's New PowerVu Plus Digital Video System Named "Best Broadcast Technology" -- Satellite Communications magazine's readers pick new PowerVu Plus system in a "groundbreaking year for new technologies" -- ATLANTA, GA -- Scientific-Atlanta's PowerVu Plus™ digital video compression system has been named "Best Broadcast Technology" in Satellite Communications magazine's reader survey for Best Technologies of 1998. The PowerVu Plus system, Scientific-Atlanta's fourth-generation digital video compression system, was among those selected as "new technologies that connect a global market" and is highlighted in the magazine's December 1998 edition. According to Satellite Communications, the new PowerVu Plus system was named Best Broadcast Technology for 1998 for its ability to help programmers, broadcasters, and service providers "transition from analog to digital." In addition to providing the best digital transmission technology, Scientific-Atlanta was also recognized for its PowerVu IP™ system. This PC-card based solution "helps meet the growing demand for delivering high-speed Internet access, data broadcast, and video-to-the-desktop applications by satellite." The popular satellite publication cited 1998 as a "groundbreaking year for new technologies" and says that the industry is "marching to the beat of a different drum" as it moves toward digital and IP-based solutions. This is the second consecutive year that Scientific-Atlanta technology has been recognized by the magazine's readers. In 1997, the company's SkyRelay® system was named "Best VSAT Technology." Shortly after it introduced the PowerVu® system, Scientific-Atlanta was honored with an Emmy in 1996 for its "pioneering role in the development and implementation of digital compression systems." "The recognition for our PowerVu Plus system and PowerVu IP products by Satellite Communications' readers is a strong validation of our products' performance in the digital video compression market," said Perry Tanner, president of Satellite Television Networks at Scientific-Atlanta. "With more than 300 Scientific-Atlanta digital video systems already delivering approximately 1000 channels of video to 170 countries, our new PowerVu Plus system positions us to expand the performance, reliability, and capabilities our customers need in a growing digital marketplace." Scientific-Atlanta's announcement of its PowerVu HD™ encoding and decoding products earlier this year supports the magazine's selection of High Definition TV (HDTV) as 1998's Best Overall New Technology. The PowerVu HD system provides a full range of digital solutions for contribution, distribution, and broadcast applications. Scientific-Atlanta digital video compression technology is currently serving a wide range of programmers, broadcasters, and service providers including PBS, Time Warner Cable/AthenaTV, ESPN, Deutsche Telekom, PanAmSat, Discovery Channel, NHK Japan, Toon Disney, Cisneros Television Group, Turner Broadcasting, Lifetime Television, and A&E Networks.
