VLSI's set top effort carries on.....Look at the target customers.techweb.com Chip sets support OpenCable spec Loring Wirbel Anaheim, Calif. - While developers agree on a basic feature set for OpenCable, including a full embedded Docsis cable modem inside a full-featured set-top box, important areas of disagreement remain on such issues as 1394 physical interface, and the implementation of the point-of-deployment connector for controlling conditional access to the set-top box. Nevertheless, on the show floor at the Western Show held here recently, VLSI Technology Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) laid out its plans for the VISTA '99 set-top-box processor, while Broadcom Corp. (Irvine, Calif.) showed off an OpenCable reference platform incorporating the BCM3120 QAMlink transceiver, the BCM3300 cable-modem device, the BCM7014 2-D/3-D graphics system and the BCM-7010 set-top-box decoder. VLSI Technology developed the VES-2750 transport mux device and VES6200 MPEG encode/decode. The embedded 108-MHz ARM7 processor was switched from the transport device to the MPEG device, which allows the chip set to use Uni-fied Memory Architecture designs, said Amar Kapadia, product marketing manager. VLSI has developed drivers for its real-time OS partner, Integrated Systems Inc. and its pSOS RTOS, but the company also is working on ports for OpenTV and Media Highway. A common processor design is being touted for the U.S. OpenCable and Pegasus projects, as well as for European satellite programs such as BSkyB and Canal+. This is why it was necessary to offer a wealth of front-end receivers for its transport and endec chips. Broadcom's recently introduced 7014 2-D/3-D proces-sor is the centerpiece for a reference design the company hopes to drive into multiple OpenCable designs. Broadcom came up with a single-board design that uses separate tuners for video and data/IP streams, and relies on a standalone 250-MHz MIPS processor for offloading packet problems. Or A lot of chips, more money, less features. VLSI's new reference design expands the company's Vista set-top-box lineup with two back-end products: the VES2750 MPEG-2 transport demux and peripheral controller, and the VES6200 MPEG-2 decoder and controller........ will be sold together and priced at $30 per pair in volume quantities.techweb.com
