That debate made Tapies even more popular and polls were placing him as favorite to be president. The French Political arena organized the political assassination of the man. Same as Berlusconi in Italy. But, he has kept his extreme popularity, and people, to this day, recognize his skills and talent in business. To take the focus away from his problems, he was the main actor of a movie shot by Claude Lellouch. Big commercial success.it kept and even increased, his mediatic popularity. He is at the term of a big litigation with state owned bank Credit Lyonnais. He was awarded 1 billion Dollars, but due to appeal that money was put in escrow at the commercial court. Word is that he is negotiating a settlement with CL to get now 500million and to stop the suit. To answer clearly your question. Yes Tapie still has the popularity and attention of the Media and of the French people. He has the same popularity in Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Holland, Spain,Israel,Turkey, Russia.
