We used to call them dumb terminals.

Then we tried calling them 'network computers'. Based on the market success of that venture I guess it's time for yet another coat of paint on a worn idea. Maybe someone will buy them this time.

This "database appliance" is for real and it is a good idea. They have been at work on it for over a year. The idea is that the OS or kernal will do one thing and one thing only--run Oracle. Much like the Network Appliance (NTAP) approach to data serving (as opposed to application serving).

I think the idea may be a winner, especially for the guys and gals already running Oracle on Unix. It may protect Oracle's installed base and even grow it into sites that may have opted for SQL Server otherwise.
