They do the A/D conversion. What format is the video in.
Do they still need a DVx chip?


The data comes out in rasterised form, uncompressed, with digital values for each pixel location. Yes, they still need some type of compression.

Q2) Could CUBE put the DVx on the back of a CMOS sensor and have a one chip MPEG2 camcorder?

CUBE could conceivably integrate DVx with a CMOS image sensor and other electronics such as memory on one chip. This probably will not happen for some time, because; (1) DVx is a very big and complex chip, (2) the analog process technology for a CMOS image sensor may be different from the digital processing technology for DVx, so it may be simpler and cheaper to keep them as separate chips. Many things can easily be integrated with the image sensor, though, such as the A/D, analog and digital filtering, an electronic shutter, and other functions.

I think that Zoran's single chip camera integrates a CMOS image sensor with JPEG compression, but this is not nearly as complex as DVx.
