Sheila -

Before you use any kind of storage medium, like floppy disks, Zip disks, hard disks, CD-RW, etc. you need to format them. It's kind of like when a real estate developer builds a new subdivision. The first thing they do is to build the roads.

Another analogy is a closet. If you want to store things in a closet, you usually put in shelves. Then you put your stuff on the shelves. Formatting a disk is like that. You are setting up the places where the data will rest.

These days, many people don't think about formatting, because when you buy floppy disks or Zips, they are pre-formatted. Like buying a closet with the shelves already there. Way back in the dark ages of the 80's, you used to have to format your disks yourself.
