I didn't know you wanted me to list everything. Of course it has a CD-ROM and speakers.

The devil is in the details when it comes to competitive pricing.
You must include both the hardware and software specifications to get a meaningful comparison.

"1. BTW, this is a market segment where Dell and Compaq business overlaps."

DELL is barely addresses this market and it does not offer MS Works.
I searched the DELL website for WORKS and came up with nothing. By the way Home Essentials is being replaced by Works.

Your comparison went way wrong because of the software packages that are included with the two machines are radically different.

There are three versions of Works:

Works 4.5 $ 54.95
Works Suite 99 $ 109
Works Deluxe 99 $ 84.95

DELL supplies their PC with

MS Office Small Business Edition --- $499

So to do a fair comparison between the two machines deduct
$ 390 from the cost of the DELL Dimension. and add $25 for the speakers.

Then DELL is $1066 to CPQ $1399.

Advantage to DELL is 31%.

Alternatively, add $390 to the CPQ product price to get
$ 1,789 and add $25 for the DELL speakers to get $1,456.

Advantage to DELL is 22.8%.

Thus the CPQ computer is not the great value that you thought it was.

I hope this helps you make a wiser purchase.

Jim Kelley
