>>>Miranda rights are <<<

What is that?

In Canada they read you rights to lawyer, etc...

We have a version of "COPS" up here, not as action filled as in the USA. No car chases, no shoot outs. Mainly busting drunks from the episods I have watched.

"What happens when you're arrested in Canada? not that you would know first hand of course?"

In Canada, we don't have the Miranda stuff. If the person arrested is NOT aware of their rights, they will NOT be informed of them. If they ARE aware of their rights, they will be presumed guilty. (Regina vs Nellis) After all, only criminals have an interest in the rights of the accused.

Another difference: Canadians don't have entrapment laws. It's perfectly acceptable here for law enforcement people to set up a situation where an otherwise law abiding person is tempted into breaking the law, then arresting them. Our police departments even grow pot to use in this way. Also, our courts view the word of jailhouse snitches as the gospel truth. (Regina vs Morin)

While were on differences: Our juries are not screened beyond name and occupation, and are very rarely sequestered. We don't need to do this because our courts ban publication of what's going on. By keeping the entire country in the dark, we can easily find sufficiently ignorant jurors. (Regina vs Bernardo)

On the positive side, even if found guilty, one can expect to spend only a short time in a pleasant leisure lodge environment. Free meals, dental and health care, education, recreation, ... Unless of course, your crime is one of acting with compassion. In that case, be prepared for the full weight of all the resources available to be brought against you. (Regina vs Latimer, Regina vs Morrison)

Nice way to begin a Sunday, PW.

P.S Canadian are proud of our prisons. We scour the world for Canadians in foreign prisons and press for them to serve their sentences here. The Brazil kidnappers come to mind.

We also don't believe in executions either. We're fighting the execution of a guy in Texas. Just this week, he's been spared for a while longer. I guess we don't mind people tying a 75 year old woman to her bed, beating in her skull with a club, and then, to stop the moaning, getting a knife from the kitchen and stabbing her through the chest until the knife point goes all the way through her and gets stuck in the mattress.
