My 2 cents: Cpq absolutely bought DEC for their technology. The alpha chip is huge. Will give big competition to INTC in 99 as it will be readily available well befor e Merced will. Also ALta Vista is not insignificant. It is one of the most widely used and advanced browsers on the net. These, and what you mentioned are why CPQ bought DEC. They did not buy it for their networking business, as it had already been sold to CS. Cpq will not considder any substantial acquisitions until at least the latter part of 99. The DEC acquisition is no small matter and will continue to require a lot of resources to integrate it with CPQ. Don't forget about wall street either. CPQ is still selling this deal to the street and the cost to the share price has been huge. They won't attempt a controversial acquisition until DEC is well behind them. While I am as down as anyone on managements managing abilities, I do believe thick headed Benson will be nudged by the board sooner rather than later to change the way this company is manged. While they haven't been as swift to adapt to new technologies or business models as they needed to be, the large installed base doesn't just go away. This company will turn around. The question isn't if, it is when and by whome
