Hi Dennis - I believe the quick answer to your question is NO but they would compete in the low end market if they pre-load their servers with SUNW's SOLARIS 7 OS (x-86 version or Merced version when available).

Perhaps in 18 months when Intel is producing their MERCED chip will the DELL/INTEL machines really compete with the middle end of SUNW's server market.

However, IMO this would be a net positive for SUNW if the box makers pre-loaded their server machines with SUNW's SOLARIS OS. Software is a higher margin product and the market would eventually assign a higher PE to SUNW's future earnings.

It will be interesting to see how this develops in the future. Users will not tolerate systems crashes once they install E-Commerce application servers for their business. These mission critical applications must show an up time of 98% or higher.

sunw/dell are two totally differnt animals. that is y both great investments. both of these companies are very focus

dell : effieciecy in their direct model. u know all that bs.
sell LOTs of widgets at a small price and cater to small
business.

sunw: perhaps not as efficient as dell.
sell FEW widgets at a HIGH price and make a lot of profit.
Cater to bigger businesses.

nothing in common except low end workstation and LOW END servers.
This is why i heavily invested in both and that is diversification for me. investment in cpq/dell does not give me diversificaion. i do have cpq as of late but i will out of it soon and i m not commited to it. just intrested in a quick profit.

Does Dell and Sunw compete against each other in the server market????????????

I would say basically no. At least not in any direct way, but I think they will in about three to six months as Dell releases powerful 4 and 8-way servers running Windows 2000.

Dell's server cannot compete with Sun.

Dennis, you must make your own decisions. No one knows what will happen to the market either next week or next January.

You've got to do your own research. If you do not follow the techs, how about following companies that make you feel comfortable?

And you are the only one who knows how much risk you can afford to take in the market at this time. Risk has two flavors, one is financial; the other is psychological. And there may be other varieties that I am not familiar with.

Still, you must make your own decisions. Read about the companies that interest you. SI has profiles on most of the companies. Please, do not let others on SI tell you what to do. They may not understand Sun at all.

And if anyone claims to know what the market will do, in the future, you should consider that person a fool.

Best wishes,

Mephisto
