I think it's a similar sorta thing. What always amazes me about pathological liars is that they often lie "unnecessarily"--that is, when doing so serves no purpose at all--and that the lies they tell are often so easily exposed.

Though perhaps more astounding is the reluctance of many people to challenge even obviously false statements.
