Most folks do not try to live in manhattan. They come in from jersey or long island, where rents are more reasonable. And the commute by train is not as bad as most bay area commutes (I used to do 680 from Alamo to San Jose so I know about 2 hours each way...). It is possible to get a 2 bedroom Apt in jersey or LI for under 2K a month, and still be 30 minutes from work.

Even in the city, central park west is high rent district, definately not for the faint hearted. pretty much limited to 7-figure income types.
