Hawking on God
or
Reason and Religion, Coexisting

A Quote From A Brief History of Time by S. Hawking

"One can imagine that God created the Universe literally at at any time in the past. On the other hand if the Universe is expanding, there may be physical reasons why there had to be a beginning. One could still imagine that God created the Universe at the instant of the big bang, or even afterwards in just such a way as to make it look as though there had been a big bang, but it would be meaningless to suppose that it was created before the big bang. An expanding universe does not preclude a creator, but it does place limits on when he might have carried out his job."

It is clear that Hawking is not a Christian, but may well be a Deist. <g>.

RE: Agnostic = Atheist

"Agnostic" was a term coined from the Greek by Huxley to confuse the issue and as a euphemism for "atheist." I once tried to have my religion listed on my dog tags as "A" and my Irish gunny sergeant said "We'll jist put down "P" for Protistant. We all believe in the same thing, don't we?
