If the SEC forces companies to amortize goodwill to the point where acquisitions erase years' worth of earnings, the companies simply will ask Wall Street to look at metrics other than earnings, such as cash flow. This is how the radio and cable industries were valued for years as their costs associated with growth made them unprofitable...."
