They may have made the $4 fallback offer as a rather crude form of hardball , to unnerve the other side - and ARP then felt obliged to protect themselves by focusing on the $5.50 offer, which Barrick has not denied.. This is the first post Bob Smith negotiation (even though he was not actively involved any more) and one wonders if Peter Munk is paying as much attention as before. E
