"Last year, Ultratech Corp. bought the small Austin, Texas-based company ISI Corp., which was under contract to make prototype Scalpel systems for about $2 million per system. Lucent's contract with ISI was then canceled, and Bell Labs workers started building two high-throughput tools that could demonstrate Scalpel's commercial viability.

"Those two high-throughput systems will be ready in the coming year. We are doing mask-development work at Murray Hill [N.J.] as well, and we expect to announce soon that there are other companies that are making the Scalpel masks," Boulin said."
