I made a few phone calls this am, and visited another garage.

The garage determined that there is no pcv valve but the equivalent being (I believe) a ccv valve. He checked this and it seem to be working fine, ie. fair amount of suction). He also commented that probably a problem with the engine.

I called back one of the shops that had seen the Jeep and recommended a rebuilt engine. I asked them what exactly they had done to determine that I needed another engine. They did neither a compression test or leak down test. They mentioned that breather tube was full of oil and that this alone would indicate a major problem with the engine. And that the cost of doing all those other tests would be uneconomical when the cost could be applied to changing the motor.

So that is about it. I guess I am back to looking for an engine.

Thanks again.

P.S. I find it so aggravating that these damn machines are built in such a way that it costs you hundreds of dollars just for them to tell you definatively what the problem is. Why the hell can they not build an engine that is simple to diagnose, without spending half a day to take it apart. Maybe this is just my ignorance talking but boy I find this frustrating. And another thing does anyone else think that the labour fees these people charge are not something from your worst nightmare. Come on now $75/hr and noone complains.

Sorry for the venting!
