Had you bought the S&P500
on Sept 1st with $As just how much would you have gained.

% monthly returns of SP-500 price in Aussie dollars

Sep-98 1.58
Oct-98 3.75
Nov-98 3.70
Dec-98 1.08

I use this info as part of the benchmark I check my performance against (45% SP500 in Aussie $, 45% First State Imputation Fund (one of the best Aussie mutuals), 10% Aussie Cash) and so had it to hand easily. That represents a simple practical passive investment approach for me. But of course the rally up till then was strengenthened by the rising dollar:

Here is the index in US and Aussie $ at the end of each month:

Dec-97 970.43 1712.16
Jan-98 980.28 1685.65391
Feb-98 1049.34 1786.54156
Mar-98 1101.75 1902.76516
Apr-98 1111.75 1969.94112
May-98 1090.82 2016.91879
Jun-98 1133.84 2157.10272
Jul-98 1120.67 2112.10946
Aug-98 957.53 1944.26801
Sep-98 1017.01 1974.89471
Oct-98 1098.67 2048.86071
Nov-98 1163.63 2124.60707
Dec-98 1165 2147.52872

The fall was a maximum of 10% from June to August.
